Inspired by the gnomes and hobgoblins of Scandinavian and Nordic mythology, gonks were believed to make their home in farm houses and barns, bringing fairy-like magic and good fortune to the families they liked and anger and trickery to those who disrespected their land - not entirely dissimilar to the more homebound Scottish brownies, Welsh Bwbachs (boo-box) and Germanic kobolds. They are now a favourite Christmas staple, their association with the festive season stemming from an old Nordic tradition of leaving out a bowl of porridge during the winter solstice, so that the family gonk could feast and join in the fun!
